China's new policies to encourage its ailing solar panel industry will boost the confidence of investors in the country's renewable energies, speed up consolidation in the solar panel industry and direct solar panel companies to further explore the domestic market to avoid trade friction, analysts said Thursday.The State Council, the country's cabinet,hoganrains, said late Wednesday that it would overhaul the solar panel industry by encouraging mergers, and that it will reform the country's electricity pricing system to expand the use of solar energy to generate electricity. "The policies recognize the problems that have plagued the country's solar panel industry, including overcapacity and too much reliance on overseas markets," Gao said. In a statement Wednesday, the State Council said it would use market mechanisms to pressure companies to merge in order to eliminate overcapacity. It will also prohibit local governments from obstructing consolidation. Local governments are often unwilling to let companies shut down or be taken over by firms from other areas, as they rely on local companies for revenue and jobs. The government will encourage individual organizations, communities and families to install and use solar panels to generate electricity. It will also boost the use of solar power on an industrial scale by offering subsidies to investors in the power generation industry to support use of the clean energy."Companies will be encouraged to explore the domestic market in order to divert them from excessive reliance on overseas markets, which will also help avoid trade protectionism against Chinese manufacturers," Meng Xian'gan, deputy chairman of the Chinese Renewable Energy Society, told the Global Times.
