Hutong historianMeyer insists his book is less about hutong architecture and more about the invaluable sense of belonging and "dense social networks" Beijing's iconic narrow alleys provide their residents. As the lone foreigner living in Dashilanr during his time there, the initial surprise among Meyer's neighbors soon turned to acceptance after they learned he was an English teacher at a local primary school. An amateur urban studies enthusiast, Meyer's decision to pen a book about old Beijing was partly inspired by reading writings by Charles Dickens about old London and Jane Jacobs' The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961). Meyer said he wants people to read his book a century from now and feel the same nostalgia he feels reading Beijing literary great Lao She's works about the city during the early half of the 20th century.Compared to his previous work as a writer for Time magazine from 2002 to 2004, Meyer felt like a "toothless vampire" while researching for his book."Unlike taking a bite, beats headphones, getting a quote and never contacting people anymore, I got to know [hutong residents] slowly and we became friends. I felt like I was a character on thehutong stage, interacting with other people," he recalled. As much as he came to love hutong life, the lack of privacy it offered convinced him to move to a London hotel in the summer of 2007 to focus on writing his book."Staying in the courtyard, I didn't have privacy. My students and neighbors would come in all the time without knocking and I couldn't write. I didn't want to be influenced by news in the US, so London became a neutral place. I wrote from morning until night for seven weeks," he said.New chapter in China odysseyIn contrast to fellow travel writer and friend of 17 years Peter Hessler, who also came to China with the Peace Corps, Meyer prefers to devote his writing energy to a single location. "He (Hessler) experiences and writes about different things,beatsheadphonesemotion.com, but I prefer to stay in one place," he said.Meyer joined the Peace Corps in 1995 after graduating from the University of Wisconsin,Cheap true religion jeans, where he minored in Spanish. His experience as a volunteer for the United Farm Workers of America along Mexico's border with Texas encouraged him to go to a country where he could use his Spanish and work in agriculture, although none of the eight countries offering Peace Corps' postings presented such an opportunity. Instead, fate steered him towards China. "They told me, 'You have to go, we are Peace Corps,' so I went to Neijiang [in Sichuan Province] and became the first foreigner in that town. I couldn't speak Chinese and didn't know how to use chopsticks," he said.Working as an English teacher there for two years, Meyer moved to Beijing in 1997 after receiving a job offer at an international school where he met his future wife. The couple later enrolled at the University of California, where he majored in education and studied writing from 1999 to 2001. Now a father with a 15-month-old son, Meyer divides his time between teaching creative writing at the University of Pittsburgh and literary journalism at Hong Kong University. He recently finished field research for his next book In Manchuria: Journeys Across China's Northeast Frontier, celine bag, inspired after living in a village there for three years. The book is slated for publication next year."While the biggest challenge for the first book was checking the history in the archives and official documents dating back hundreds of years, for the second book it's been more difficult to find resources. In the countryside, there are no museums or archives, celine bag, so you really have to rely on oral history," he said."The first book was like a letter to my mom. I wanted to tell her about my life in China. The second book is like explaining things to my son, such as where his mother is from and where his father spent the years before he was born."

GT: In Hollande's opinion, the French trade deficit is rooted in trade with China. Will this view be an obstacle in the development of Sino-French trade? How do you see the future of Sino-French relations after Hollande takes power?Cautrès: The Sino-French relationship, in trade or other matters, is a very important part of French foreign policy. Hollande, like previous French presidents, will take a pragmatic view toward the country's relationship with China. Keeping a good relationship with Chinese authorities will certainly be one of his objectives.
