DOE's incinerator now in 'safe shutdown'
The TSCA Incinerator, which ceased operations three years ago after burning more than 35 million pounds of hazardsous and radioactive wastes, has now been placed in "safe shutdown" mode, the Department of Energy's environmental contractor announced today.
The final boxes of waste from cleanup of the incinerator were shipped on Dec. 13, Project Manager Mary Magleby said in a statement released by UCOR.
"The facility is now in what is called a safe shutdown mode and will be safely maintained until funding is available to demolish it," the contractor said.

Wastes were shipped to Oak Ridge from numerous Department of Energy sites to burn at the incinerator, which is located on the east end of the site now known as the East Tennessee Technology Park.
Chemical operator Brenda Carroll,Kobe 8 Venice Beach For Sale, who worked at the incinerator from its inception, said in a statement, "Other incinerators burned different types of waste, but this was the only one that did it all. It could do virtually anything."
Closure activities began under the leadership of Bechtel Jacobs and were continued by UCOR, the current cleanup manager in Oak Ridge. The activities included cleaning, rinsing, and decontamination of tanks, flooring, sumps, and other equipment.,Nike Air Max Sale, UCOR said.
