While the more amped up and exceptional "Captain America: First Avenger" was a stronger and well written film with great effects and stunts, this version is pretty much a trial run of what could've been had it been backed by Marvel themselves or another studio such as Paramount, Twentieth Century-Fox or Universal for example. The film is pretty much half an origin story and quickly sped up to the more modern 1990's eliminating alot of the events in the story of Steve Rogers (played by Matt Salinger in this film) and most of Red Skull's (Scott Paulin) in exchange for some well done action sequences eliminating the drama of Rogers' reanimation into the real world fifty years later that he doesn't know about. Salinger's performance is really good and is one of the film's few saving graces along with positive support of veteran actors, Ronny Cox (Total Recall, RoboCop), Melinda Dillon (A Christmas Story), Ned Beatty (Deliverance), and Darren McGavin (A Christmas Story). The film does the best it could with its' real limited budget and Director Albert Pyun (taking over for John Stockwell), does a decent enough job to keep most entertained for the most part the way he's done with other exciting films other than this one such as "Sword And The Sorcerer" and "Mean Guns".
